"The sole that conquered Everest" is still made in the USA and still the sole of choice for mountaineers, firefighters, loggers, motorcyclists—and just about anyone whose life may depend on their soles maintaining traction. And thanks to Vibram's proprietary SBR compound, the 100 can withstand exposure to various oils, solvents, and a wide range of temperatures. However, durability is where this sole truly stands apart from its peers, as it is one of the few lugged soles that can hold up on pavement as well as turf.

When Loggers Were Just Ordinary Men

But When Ordinary Men Did Extraordinary Things

Today, wood production is a highly specialized trade. The "loggers" of times past are now Foresters, Buckers, Fallers, or Cutters. The boots these tradesmen wear are similarly specialized—and are no longer practical for us mere consumers and enjoyers of wood. But it wasn't always like this. A century or so ago, farmhands and factory workers might take a job logging for a few months without ever having received any specialized training. As hired hands without much to spare nor any equipment safety standards to meet, investing in a pair of specialized boots would have been out of the question. Instead, most added spikes or hobnails to a pair of boots already on-foot, likely farm boots or a surplus pair from what they would have called 'The Great War.'

These limited-edition boots commemorate the makeshift boots from the early days of America's lumber industry—and the scrappy-brave men who wore them. Each pair is hand-lasted with Seidel's heavyweight Logger leather, which is all but identical to the leather most commonly used for service and work boots in the early 20th century. Both feature Vibram 100 "Montagna" lugged soles, which most would agree are a tad more comfortable and practical than hobnails or spikes. While old-time loggers may never have had boots quite this good, none of us will ever know the pleasure of sitting atop the fresh stump of a mighty American Chestnut with a grand view of the valley and a can of smoked sardines.
