Those who painted the caves at Lascaux, some 17,000 years ago, brought mammoths to life with the oxide ocher. The Renaissance was made possible not just by hands of Great Masters, but by their apprentices, who would dutifully infuse linseed oil with oxides umber and sienna. And when Jacques-Louis David painted 'The Coronation of Napoleon,' he chose ferric oxide to render the ambitious upstart’s red robes.
