So Unlike Other Leathers, It Goes by Another Name
Shell Cordovan is a rare and uniquely exquisite equine leather made from the connective tissue beneath the hide on the rump. The leather is thin and flexible but also extremely dense, characteristics which combine to resist creases and cracks, even after many years of wear (with proper care). This density also reduces the size of pores and other surface characteristics, resulting in a grain so fine that pores and other surface characteristics are all but invisible to the naked eye.
Worth the Wait
A New Partner from the Old Country
Our mission is to preserve the tradition of American shoemaking. We have always known the best way to serve that mission is to offer customers the best value in fine footwear. Offering better prices than bigger brands with bigger factories is not always easy—and not always possible. Fortunately, we have something to offer they can never match: the patience and persistance to make someting special—the sort of thing that can only be done in small quantities and only by those willing to log the hours. Of course, all cordovan is rather rare and special, but we found a partner just as small as we are, just as ambitious, and just as keen to find new uses for the old ways.
That partner is Rocado S.R.L., one of Tuscany’s artisan tanneries still committed to 'il metodo tradizionale,' the traditional Tuscan method of tanning Cordovan that served as the world’s benchmark for over a millennia. Oak Street Bootmakers’ Tuscan Shell Cordovan is made by Rocado in very small batches, even by Cordovan standards. This allows for a true creative partnership, which is already yielding rare and exclusive colors—without any waiting lists and at prices based on the cost of production rather than market demand.
